Our product manager, Heidrun Frommherz, visited together with some Swiss customers Van Drunen Farms in Serbia – one of Varistors long-term partners for freeze dried fruits.
All about berries!
Van Drunen Farms is our expert for freeze dried fruits. The product portfolio includes above all raspberries, blackberries, sour cherries, blueberries (wild), strawberries - all of them in different cut sizes and in conventional quality, as well as on request in organic quality. Since June this year van Drunen is also certified for Biosuisse quality !
Additional portfolio: Black and red currant, peaches, apricots and freeze dried vegetable as peas, sweet corns and cauliflower.
During our visit we had the chance to see the whole supply chain. In the region of Radevina, Western part of Serbia, we could visit the frozen producer who delivers the frozen berries to Van Drunen Farms. We could also see the plantation of raspberry and blackberry in a beautiful hillside sourrounding. At the time we were there, raspberries were harvested and blackberries due in two weeks time.
The frozen berries are processed at Van Drunen Farms. They are placed in frozen stage in the required cut size on trays, which are then placed in the drying ovens. The process of sublimation (withdrawal of water through heat and vaccuum) takes about 20 hours – depending on the product. Van Drunen works on 8 drying ovens, one additional is under construction.
After the process of freeze drying, the fruits are further processed according to customer specifications and prepared for dispatch. A comprehensive quality control is done in-house.
